A brief overview of part of the product, through a Figma prototype
Pexip is one of the leading companies in enterprise videoconferencing. Used by the likes of NASA and Vodafone on a daily basis, their service is flexible and can be used with third-party videoconferencing tools like Google Meet or Microsoft Teams.

The team and my role
On our end, I worked together with another Product Designer. We collaborated closely with a team at Pexip consisting of a Product Design Lead, an Engineering Lead, and two Engineers. In my role, my focus was on the client relationship, on overseeing the product work together with their Product Design Lead, dividing work between us Product Designers, and crafting the interface.

While both of us were involved in the UX of the product, I had a heavier hand in the visual design. Practically, that means that beyond crafting the interface, I also helped define the direction for the iconography and sound design, commissioning external people to deliver us a set of icons and sounds to use in the product.

Our deliverables covered everything: from the onboarding, to the in-call experience, down to the controls in the settings
A new web app
Pexip's product had always been development-led, hadn't been (re)designed in a number of years, and we worked within a host of technical and design constraints to deliver an improved version of what their large, corporate customer-base were using. We scoped and redesigned their product from the ground up, working within the brand identity that was created for them shortly before this project started. Opting for a calm and paired-down design language in which the participants could shine, we always made sure to design for reality, using real avatars and actual looping video recordings throughout the product.

The Pexip web app was our main focus, and we designed it over the course of 6 months. We interviewed users and stakeholders to give us direction, and tested (Figma) prototypes of our wireframes and designs with a set of users throughout the process. I created a simple Figma design system Pexip’s designers and developers could build upon, and we provided a set of copywriting guidelines for them to work with.

Companion apps for phones and meeting rooms
After we finished designing the web app, we created new and improved companion apps for iOS and Android. Mimicking the feature set of the web app as much as possible—yet delivering a minimum viable version of both for their developers to build—we designed the two apps over the course of three months. We took great care to design a cohesive experience, despite numerous technical constraints (one of which being the fact that we could not display participants' video in full-screen, as seen below).
Lastly, I laid the groundwork for Pexip Room—meeting room software that runs on Android-based conference room systems—together with Pexip's Product Design Lead and Android Engineer. Working within the version of Google's Material Design guidelines in play at the time, we designed a first version of the product that—for the first time—paired Pexip with hardware through Logitech's Tap.

From the big picture, down to the details
Throughout the project which, given its scope, was delivered in a short amount of time, I focused a lot on the bigger picture: whether or not Pexip's development team could build what we designed, how their corporate customer-base would receive it, and whether their internal stakeholders (a large group!) were supportive of our work.
While doing so, I never lost sight of the details and spent a lot of time getting them right: providing feedback to the sound designer, tweaking colours to comply with Norwegian accessibility laws, and iterating on the typography to improve legibility across devices—we didn't leave a stone unturned in the time we were given.

Renders of Pexip Room, a simple companion for Logitech-powered meeting rooms
“Daniël is the best designer I've worked with so far in my career. Impeccable attention to detail and a great problem-solver. He's also very friendly, easy to work with and delivers on time despite tight turnaround times.”

Regardless of its brief timeline and technical and visual constraints, I immensely enjoyed working on this project: crafting a product across a variety of touch points and resolutions with a team of talented individuals is not something you get to do every day, and I am thankful for the experience.

Thank you to the rest of the core team: Anniken Frich, Camilla Holst-Hansen, Svenn-Petter Mæhle, Nico Cormier, Ian Mortimer and Łukasz Zgrzebski.
